Peter Falk gives one of the greatest performances of an actor playing a TV detective. The difference with this detective is not guessing who is the murderer. But rather how long they can go before they give themselves away from the constant questions from Columbo, who hides in his shabby coat, with a bumbing personality, a fierce intellect ready to get his man. Roddy McDowell guests in a fantastic episode who is caught in a typical Columbo way. Also in this collection, is the first episode, the pilot made in 1968 3 years before a proper TV series was made. Not only does Peter Falk look alot younger, but with his usual mannerisms which would become famous for his character, this younger Columbo has a much more harder side to his personality as he tries to break down an accessory to the murderer. I've certainly never seen Columbo be that hard hitting with his questioning. Still - its all good stuff and he is rightly one of the best TV detectives.
Re-watching these Crime Stories is pure joy.
The magic of columbo, is the actual deduction of the crime. The first half hour is always the crime itself genrally well defined and quite ingenious. But watching Columbo solve the crime is the actual joy of the whole thing.
Peter Falk who played Columbo did a marvelous job, always bringing a bit of mystery to the character but always proving you cant judge a book by its cover (he looks non-intelligent and always wears scruffy clothes and signature raincoat)
The series had a slower pace to other cop shows of the year, but its intelligent stories and acting kept the series going for over 2 decades
Great viewing for a Sunday Afternoon and highly recommended
The only downside is the lack of extras on the DVD's. Commentary or Interviews would be most welcome
