A rare look at World War II from the Soviet side, Come and See is based on the real-life experiences of Ales Adamovich, who fought with Russian partisans in Belarus in 1943, when the Nazis systematically torched over 600 villages and slaughtered their inhabitants. Adamovich and director Elem Klimov co-authored the screenplay, which shows the horrors through the eyes of a 13-year-old peasant boy named Florya (Alexei Kravchenko). Over his single mother's protests, he joins the partisans, but they leave him behind in their camp when they set off to fight the Germans. Glascha (Olga Mironova), a lovely young girl, befriends him, but the two are caught in the midst of an air raid which leaves Florya nearly deaf. Now utterly frightened, Florya and Glascha return to his village to find it in ruins, and, in one of the film's many harrowing scenes, they wade through a swamp to locate the survivors. Now committed to seek vengeance for the death of his mother and neighbors, Florya returns to the front, but finds himself in a village that's right in the path of the Nazi firestorm. A band of partisans arrive too late to save the village but in time to capture and mete out justice to several of the Nazi officers. Yes do see

My review would be in the middle of the ones I have read. Not the best but certainly not the rubbish some have said. Gritty, earthy, pulling no punches are certainly in its favour (if that's what you want) Some of the lingering close ups of the main characters were a bit wooden, and the final rewind scene could have been done without. But over all a good warts and all war film.

A masterpiece.

A masterpiece. For me, this is the most powerful anti war film I have ever seen. Brilliant soundtrack too. Don't expect any Hollywood style comfort zones, or gimmicky editing. The 'gaze' here is unflinching, and compelling.

Far from being obsessed with 'effects' and other nonsense, this film actually shows what the war was like. As confirmed by those who actually lived through the occupation, it is the closest to their experience.

Genocide in the East

Before viewing,be sure to select the option'Russian with English subtitles' - the 'Dubbing in English' alternative is awful! Younger viewers may think that the portrayal of a Nazi Extermination Squad was OTT Soviet propaganda but this was official state policy. Stalin was even worse!

Probably the best war film ever made

Probably the best war film ever made , whoever says this is boring is not watching the same film,. The way the little boy ages through the film is just amazing, great acting and superb direction
