When wealthy American businessman Rock Hudson visits his Italian villa in July, instead of September as usual, he discovers it is being run as a hotel in his absence. His major-domo (Walter Slezak), glamorous Gina Lollobrigida and young newlyweds Bobby Darin and Sandra Dee (just married in real life, too) become involved in the comic confusions that follow. Directed with appropriate insouciance by Robert Mulligan and played with easy charm by Hudson, who had proved his comedy credentials in Pillow Talk, the result is an inconsequential but amusing movie that is typical of the style and approach of early 1960s Hollywood.

  • Clumsy sex farce with lush trimmings and generation gap asides; effort more noticeable than achievement.

    Made me laugh so much

I loved this film, has my dream car in it as well, and it's the movie where bobby darrin met Sandra Dee, it's just old fashioned and romantic, just my cup of tea.

    If you're a fan of the 50s and 60s you'll like it.

Typical early 60s comedy with all the candy.

Story is of a millionaire (Rock Hudson) who comes back to his holiday home in Italy to find out while he's been away the staff have secretly been renting it out as a hotel.

What's more a group of teenage boys (led by Bobby Darin) are hoping to crash the place to get in with a group of teenage girls (including Sandra Dee).

Whether you like the film will largely will depend on whether you're a fan of the 50s/early sixties and the people who defined that generation. If you're not, you may find the film drags after a while as there's little by way of great gags.

If you're interested in the era, you may want to rent the film 'Beyond the Sea' which is a biography of Booby Darin. The making of Come September features in the film, so it's interesting to compare the depiction of the movie with the actual thing.
