Heavy comedy, short of laughs and sympathy; a distinct descent from Local Hero, which was a comedown after Gregory's Girl.

This is one of Bill Forsyth's best films. Easily up there with Gregory's Girl and Local Hero among the best British comedies of the eighties. This is not laugh out loud humour though. Most of it is based on character, and in this case the character is lonely and flawed. Something almost everyone can relate to at some time. Bill Paterson gives what could possibly be a career best performance as 'Dickie' Bird, a Glasgow Local Radio D.J. who is looking for new meaning in his life after long time girlfriend leaves him around Christmas time without any warning. In an attempt to be more 'grown up' he gets involved in an Ice Cream war. Some great memorable scenes, and some beautifully shot images make this a film that you should not dismiss as just a comedy. If you have never seen this one, give it a try. It has a gentle pace, but I am sure you will not be disappointed.
At last this film is out on DVD - a very good film that got everything.
Very good script full of laughs and sadness - the violence is comic rather than realistic.
I remember really enjoying this film when it came out - normally the memory plays tricks but not this time.
Well worth watching - Bill Forsyth and Bill Paterson in their prime, not over the top just good fun.
