(56)very average comedy
By JackDW (18 reviews) from York , 14 Oct 2010The Comic Strip has not aged well - but was it ever any good? I've watched a dozen of these old episodes now, and the only one that I'd watch again is the first: Five Go Mad In Dorset. The rest, meh.
I get the sense that the writers and cast were given a great deal of freedom with The Comic Strip. Unfortunately, this 'protection from editors' mostly doesn't result in works of comedy genius - instead, it's pretentious and self-indulgent, with occasional flashes of inspiration that don't make up for the mess. A great shame, because almost everyone involved with The Comic Strip was demonstrably capable of so much more. Rent 'The Young Ones' instead.- Was this review helpful to you?

Never Ever Bl**dy Anything Ever
By LocalH3ro (5 reviews) from St. Andrews , 05 Nov 2009I'm renting this mostly for 'Mr Jolly Lives Next Door' because I remember it's Tom & Jerry slapstick humour had me in stitches back in the day. Although that prize is still to come there have been enough gems on the earlier disc's to setup it's arrival (A Fistful Of Traveller's Cheques....'is everybody happy la la la lala la').
Comic Strip was one of those programs you'd watch on a School night (when your parents were out of the room) and, like Python (reruns), would quote lines from the next day.
The image of Ade Edmondson portraying Historic British Icons on the Dreamy Time Escorts tour of London is one of the many images of 'Mr Jolly' that's stayed with me from the 80's.
(Winston Churchill didn't gesture quite like that but if he did WWII might have finished sooner).- Was this review helpful to you?
