Following his melodramatic study of the Mumbai underworld in the 1998 film, Satya, director Ram Gopal Varma takes a sturdier approach in this uncompromising exposé of how criminal gangs have taken control of every aspect of Indian life — from politics and commerce, to the running of Bollywood itself. A dangerous thing to do for Varma when the tentacles of crime do indeed extend into the fabric of Indian cinema. But, with Ajay Devgan and Vivek Oberoi flexing their muscles as the mortal foes and South Indian superstar Mohan Lal impressing as a crusading police inspector, this still makes for revealing and riveting viewing.
This is awesome. Bollywood does mafia with style, grit and a brilliant script. Recommended viewing, unless you want to see a couple dancing around a tree...
This is one of the better gangster and underworld movies to come out of Bollywood. Though it's not slick, it is raw and real, and the performances by each and every cast member are top-notch - especially Vivek Oberoi's. The music is nothing special, certainly not something that helps the film, but it is suited to its genre. The movie shows the futility of crime in a very real and mater-of-fact way. However, the storyline tends to get confusing at times with all of these 'code names' they have for each other, but other than that it really is a commendable movie worth watching; better than Kaante.
