Following CONAN THE BARBARIAN, Arnold Schwarzenegger returns as Robert E. Howard's warrior hero in action director Richard Fleischer's CONAN THE DESTROYER. First seen praying at a shrine, Conan and his sidekick, Malak (Tracey Walter), are inveigled by Queen Taramis (Sarah Douglas) into joining Princess Jehnna (Olivia d'Abo) and her bodyguard, Bombaata (Wilt Chamberlain), on a quest to wrest a magic key from the wizard Toth-Amon (Pat Roach). On the journey, Conan saves his magician friend, Akiro (Mako), from cannibals and helps female bandit Zula (Grace Jones) as she fights off some angry villagers. The motley crew find Toth-Amon's castle in the middle of a lake. But, while they rest for the night before confronting the wizard, he spirits away Princess Jehnna. Conan leads the rescue.
Compared to the first Conan movie, CONAN THE DESTROYER has less violence but more humour. The film's stunt casting includes the 7-foot-tall basketball player Wilt Chamberlain and pneumatic singer Grace Jones. Other actors featured are the 17-year-old Olivia d'Abo (in her first screen appearance), playing the petulant teenage princess with sexy innocence; Tracey Walter as the cowardly jewel-swallowing thief, Malak the Quick; and, of course, Schwarzenegger, who put on 10 extra pounds at Fleischer's request, as the pectorally-perfect Conan.

Arnold Schwarzenegger returns to his breakthrough role as the mythical muscle-bound hero but the kitsch magic of the John Milius original is missing this time around. However, the requisite number of ugly villains, beautiful temptresses and doe-eyed heroines are present and correct, Schwarzenegger doesn't have much acting to do and director Richard Fleischer keeps the often violent action flowing smoothly. Look out for Grace Jones as a lethal warrior.
"...The ideal sword and sorcery picture. Loaded with action and pitched just right for maximum tongue-in-cheek humor..."
While not the masterpeice that conan the barbarian was (and still is) this 2nd outing for the muscled hyborean hero is still worth a watch! The action is very good in parts and the final battle is great. The supporting cast varies from very good (Mako) to very poor (Tracy Walters). But the overall adventure is worthwhile. Pity there probably won't be a third film (Crown of Iron)now that Arnie has taken to politics!
You know what you are getting when you rent an Arnie film from the 80s, and the second Conan film doesn't disappoint. Plenty of bulging biceps, cheesy one-liners, gory sword fights and Arnie's wooden lines before he became an "established" (ahem) actor. Great stuff.
One of the things that I always think sets the Conan films apart from other of Arnies 80s style action movies is the musical score. Written by the same chap who did 'Star Wars' and 'Superman', it gives an impression of depth on an otherwise enjoyably shallow film.
For many fans of Robert E Howard's fantasy novels the figure of Conan the Barbarian will be forever obscured by the spectre of one-time Austrian bodybuilder now Governor of California Arnold Schwarzenegger. For Howard purists the Dino De Laurentiis-produced Conan The Barbarian and Conan The Destroyer proved a little less than faithful to the origins of their Hyperborean Age hero. However, it's unlikely that De Laurentiis' Conans would be viewed with the same degree of scorn reserved for the... Read more
