Michael Crichton's novel, on which this adventure is based, tried to do for gorillas what his Jurassic Park did for dinosaurs. But, under Frank Marshall's bland direction, this trek-through-the-jungle adventure is a disappointingly old-fashioned affair that lacks any sense of wonder. The plot, combining a lost civilisation, a highly intelligent gorilla that's been taught communication skills and venal scientists after diamonds for a laser gun, is a lacklustre Boys' Own no-brainer, and the movie scrapes the bottom of the fantasy barrel in terms of credibility, dire acting and clichéd special effects.
Heady nonsense, a throwback to those old movies based on Victorian adventure stories; it is hokum of a sort rarely seen since the days of Nyoka the Jungle Girl.
This film is not entirely true to the Michael Crichton novel. They have added a few new characters and more brutal death, but less technology and realistic sentiment. A somewhat intricate movie about a primatologist and an acquaintance who possesses a gorilla that can talk (via an electronic headset) called Amy. They choose to go to Amy's native land to ascertain what happened to a team that set out on an expedition and hasnt been heard of since.
Amy is a bit cardboard and Tim Currys accent is very dodgy, but if you can ignore these, its a very entertaining and funny adventure film.
