Connie And Carla

Reminiscent of SOME LIKE IT HOT, VICTOR VICTORIA and TOOTSIE, CONNIE AND CARLA is a musical comedy in drag written by and co-starring Nia Vardalos of MY BIG FAT GREEK WEDDING. Best friends since their school days, Connie (Vardalos) and Carla (Toni Collette) are airport lounge singers with dreams of someday making it big on the cabaret circuit. Past their prime and going nowhere in their hometown of Chicago, their break comes when they accidentally witness a mob murder, flee to L.A., and disguise themselves in drag. They dazzle the drag community with their singing talent and their suspiciously authentic feminine figures. Soon they become one of the hottest nightclub shows around with a larger-than-life secret upon which their fame depends. Their struggle to keep their secret becomes even more difficult when Connie meets Jeff (David Duchovny), the straight brother of one of her drag friends (Stephen Spinella), and begins to fall in love. A complicated affair ensues with Jeff believing he is falling for a man in drag and Connie struggling to keep her true identity hidden in a series of wacky mix-ups and close calls. Vardalos and Collette sing and dance in a variety of campy numbers, featuring classic show tunes from EVITA, CABARET, and GYPSY.

Writer Nia Vardalos's insipid follow up to 2002's surprise hit My Big Fat Greek Wedding has her and Toni Collette playing wannabe singers who decide to disguise themselves as performers in a West Hollywood drag club after accidentally witnessing a Mob murder. Weakly plotted gender-confusion comedy follows as Connie (Vardalos) falls for a drag queen's straight brother (a virtually charm-free David Duchovny) who doesn't realise that she's a woman. There's the odd laugh to be had from the duo's dodgy stage routines, but Connie and Carla struggles helplessly with a woefully underwritten script and a central pairing lacking the fizzy personalities essential for this kind of silly fluff to work.

CHIN UP, BOOBS OUT- IT'S SHOWTIME!!!

I just can't help but love and admire Toni Collette. I thought she was ace when I saw her in Muriel's Wedding for the first time- and look at her now! She is without doubt one of the most versatile, talented actresses around- and yet it is sooo refreshing to see her in this fabulously light hearted comedy romp, together with 'My... Greek Wedding's Nia Vardos.

In a nutshell, it's a hoot. And camper than a pink Christmas tree fairy in a row of tents. Connie and Carla are a talented, yet underrated duo, bringing show tunes to those who don't 'get them'. After witnessing a crime, they go on the run and end up hiding in the disguise of drag queens. Show tune singing drag queens that is. (Women pretending to be men pretending to be women, in other words.) The fact that Connie and Carla can sing and not just mime soon brings in more and more punters and they become quite the phenomenon. Cue a handsome complication in the shape of David Duchovny....

As you expect, the film is stacked from wig to stiletto with one-liners and gags, but there is a lot of uplifting self belief encouragement here as wel. And Debbie Reynolds.

Doubtful about the whole show tunes thing? Take it from me as someone who has been frowned upon in the past for not knowing his South Pacific from his Other Musicals: You'll find yourself humming along and being swept up in it as easily as the Russian gangster chasing Connie and Carla- it's all just part of the film's charm rather than the centre piece.

A perfect cheer me up movie that will have you smiling, laughing and feeling warm and fuzzy every time.

    Handbags and Gladrags!

Connie and Carla looked more like drag queens than the boys did. It's all about the outfit and the accessories. Great film, full of laughs and music. Ideal to watch with a drink and a few friends. The plot did remind me of Sister Act, with the drag queens replacing the nuns and the bar replacing the convent, but that didn't matter. Think I'll be watching this one again.

A sequel to The X-Files movie is set to start filming in December, it was alleged this week by the man who played special agent Fox Mulder. David Duchovny, who starred in the TV series for nine years, recently told Movieweb that a script for a second X-Files movie has been written and moves are being made to try and start production before the end of the year. In addition, he discussed his reasons for leaving the show and why he wants to keep the plot of the new film under wraps. "I got... Read more
