Whose conspiracy?
By Bosola (12 reviews) from Hounslow , 14 Jul 2010Despite its crude, formulaic characterisations and some pretentious editing, this unsubtle action film is worth a look because of its underlying themes. Firstly, it is a remake of John Sturgess marvellous 1955 thriller, Bad Day at Black Rock and, just as that earlier film used Western and film noir genres to critique racism and paranoia in Cold War America, so Conspiracy attempts to hold up a mirror to a post 9/11 America; a country in the grip of racism, paranoia and foreign wars, engendered by neo-con politicians (the real conspirators of the title). In both films the small Western town is an allegorical representation of the Nation; in Bad Rock it is isolated and decaying; in Conspiracy it is apparently thriving and expanding but, in reality built on immigrant slave labour and dominated by Halicorps (a thinly-disguised Haliburton?) and its goons. Seen thus, the disabled Iraq war vet, Val Kilmers threats to burn it all down is a radical cry and the film is an attempt to reclaim a misappropriated American patriotism from the racist imperialism of the Right.
Significantly, the film has been denied wide spread release, and is criticised for technical incompetence by the multiplex morons who sit through equally crude but brain-dead action films in their droves. Look at the other reviews here, which tell you all you need to know. I cannot give this film many stars for brilliance, but I can acknowledge it has the courage of its convictions.- Was this review helpful to you?
