A True Classic
By Sir John Read from Ascot , 04 Jun 2008[Highly rated reviewer]
This film successfully transports the viewer into the troubled world of Luke, a popular (but not necessarily seeking popularity) man. He at some point hits the self-destruct button but I loved him and was totally absorbed in his struggle against both the system and life generally. A great film which is a triumph of substance over action.- Was this review helpful to you?

Heat Wave
By Otter379 (58 reviews) , 10 Apr 2013Cool Hand Luke is an iconic film. Filmed with a warm orange glow and scorched landscapes. Everybody in this film looks hot and sweaty. Being from the temperate isles of Great Britain and not being afraid of hard work I can only imagine the levels of discomfort of having to work in the midday sun during a heat wave. Paul Newman is the recalcitrant Luke with authority issues who ends up in a southern chain gang after be-heading some parking meters. A true classic.- Was this review helpful to you?

A Cool Movie
By Abby88 (167 reviews) from Bognor Regis , 29 Nov 2012An entertaining prison drama. Paul Newman is always likeable and enjoyable to watch. An engaging film with a slow but nice feel to it.- Was this review helpful to you?

What we've got here is failure to communicate
By Bassman71 (619 reviews) from Didsbury, England , 25 Jul 2012Man gets two years in prison camp for sawing off parking metre heads, guards and prisoners give him hard time, wins prisoners over, guards and Governor not happy, Cool Hand Luke.
Paul Newman in one of his many fantastic roles playing an ex-War hero down on his luck but gives the inmates optimism despite all the odds.
It is quite a dark and sad film with Newmans character hiding his demons and youre never really sure what hell do next.
Good support from George Kennedy despite his accent being all over the place and Strother Martin as the Captain.
Lalo Schifrin also turns in a fine score with a memorable theme and some really nice incidental pieces throughout.- Was this review helpful to you?

You need to get "your mind right"!
By a customer , 14 Jul 2012The reviewer who said they could not get into Paul Newman's character must have been expecting him to be a hero. This film is famous for him being an anti-hero, a rebel and an anarchist.
The thing that drives this film is Luke's stubbornness and refusal to conform and the more trouble he gets into, the more he rebels.
If you are a nonconformist yourself, you will relate to this film and Luke's character. If you were a trouble maker at school, you will love it!- Was this review helpful to you?
