A True ClassicBy Sir John Read from Ascot , 04 Jun 2008
[Highly rated reviewer]This film successfully transports the viewer into the troubled world of Luke, a popular (but not necessarily seeking popularity) man. He at some point hits the self-destruct button but I loved him and was totally absorbed in his struggle against both the system and life generally. A great film which is a triumph of substance over action.

Awesome stuffBy queeniewiz (3 reviews) , 04 Aug 2011A slow burner, but fantastic film. Who knew Paul Newman was so hot in his younger days!! Everyone should watch this.
As a cucumberBy Emjay69 (341 reviews) from Kidlington, Oxford , 28 Jul 2011Good film with good acting and sets but...
I felt that it dragged on a bit. Don't get me wrong, it's well worth watching, perhaps a classic in it's own right, but for me, it could have been 30 minutes shorter and still be a very good film.
Would I watch it again? Yes, no problem.
Cooler than Cool Hand LukeBy oli74 (44 reviews) from firstname.lastname@example.org , 22 Mar 2011I have waited to long to see this film. I thought it was outstanding, from the reason Newman was sent to prison to the end. I highly recommend this film to anyone that hasn't seen it.

THIS REVIEW CONTAINS SPOILERS Show review anywayHideCool Hand Luke is an intriguing and thoughtful crime drama. The story of Lucas Jackson (Paul Newman) who is arrested and sentenced to 2 years in prison for vandalising municipal property. He is sent to a tough Southern outdoor prison run by a sadistic warden, referred to by all the prisoners as Captain, and all the guards as Boss. It is funny, as Luke has a lot of funny one liners and smart remarks, which get him into no end of trouble. But at the same time it is the story of a man who will not conform to a society that tries to break him. With hard labour in the fields, strict rules that if broken you will be severely punished, and under the constant vigilance of 'the man with no eyes', who never says a word, but just with a hard stare and imposing figure makes a lasting impression which anyone watching, myself included, will not forget quickly! But Luke is also quite smart in his own way; he asks philosophical questions and talks about God, law and order, and society, and for a man like him, who believes he never heard anything worth listening to, he realises that that is how he has got to where he has come to now. This movie has great directing, great writing and great acting. One of the memorable scenes is when Luke eats fifty eggs, and another memorable scene when all the prisoners are observing a beautiful woman washing a car... and how lonely they feel, being in the belly of the beast! There is also a very beautiful moment when Luke is playing a banjo and singing the song Plastic Jesus. It has a great music score too. Two thumbs up; ten out of ten; go watch this!
Newman at his absolute peak!!By OPENTHEPODBAYDOORHAL (24 reviews) from Wiltshire, England , 10 Nov 2010I hadn't seen this film for years and was a bit concerned that it would be one of those 'classics' that when watched again would prove to be a huge let-down. I shouldn't have worried! Absolutely wonderful!! Paul Newman was never better and certainly never prettier. A great film which was also enjoyed immensely by my wife who had never seen it before. Only trouble is, she's now in love with Paul Newman!
