In the idyllic bedroom community of Garrison, New Jersey, a community of NYPD officers takes refuge away from the big city's troubles while still enjoying all the kickbacks, cover-ups, and mob-owned banking privileges from across the river. But the code of silence is tested when an off-duty, drunk rookie cop from their ranks wrongfully kills two black men and the local sheriff begins to investigate. COP LAND is an ambitious ensemble drama notable for eliciting a strong performance (and a 40-lb weight gain) from Sylvester Stallone.

"...[Stallone] joins the dazzling ranks of James Mangold's COP LAND, dutifully holds the film together and emerges with a shrewdly revitalized career in store....COP LAND has talent to burn..."
"...It is tense. And it's almost eerie to see a self-effacing Stallone acting with co-stars of dramatic weight while delivering a performance of feeling..." -- 3 out of 4 stars
Solid but unexceptional thriller, mainly interesting for the casting of Stallone in a role that would demand a greater acting range than normally associated with him. In fact, his character has room for most character development in the whole script, and Stallone does show he can master a range of emotions, including self pity and loathing, frustration and a longing for the unattainable. Certainly he holds his acting honours well opposite such stalwarts as the ever dependable Keitel, the showy but charismatic De Niro, and Liotta to whom here the top acting honours must go.
To be honest, the plots highly contrived, and too much is dependent on narrative exposition rather than internal verisimilitude (were constantly told what the township known as Copland is like, rather than seeing how it is through the lives of the characters living and working there), and De Neros opening and closing voiceover are a trite way to set and then wrap up the plot; but that said its an enjoyable enough ride that keeps you watching.
In the final analysis, though, it is a typical Stallone feel good movie; and although in reality the payoff line Freddie knew what they didnt know that nobodys above the law isnt true in real life, well it jolly well should be, shouldnt it?
What great casting for this film. My two favourite actors, Robert De Niro and Ray Liotta back together on screen after the brilliant Goodfellas.
I have never been a fan of Sly Stallone but I have changed my mind after seeing him in this, he was really good.
Really convincing storyline and ending.
