  Solid but unexceptional thriller, mainly interesting for the casting of Stallone in a role that would demand a greater acting range than normally associated with him. In fact, his character has room for most character development in the whole script, and Stallone does show he can master a range of emotions, including self pity and loathing, frustration and a longing for the unattainable. Certainly he holds his acting honours well opposite such stalwarts as the ever dependable Keitel, the showy but charismatic De Niro, and Liotta to whom here the top acting honours must go.
  
  To be honest, the plots highly contrived, and too much is dependent on narrative exposition rather than internal verisimilitude (we’re constantly told what the township known as “Copland” is like, rather than seeing how it is through the lives of the characters living and working there), and De Nero’s opening and closing voiceover are a trite way to set and then wrap up the plot; but that said it’s an enjoyable enough ride that keeps you watching.
  
  In the final analysis, though, it is a typical Stallone “feel good movie”; and although in reality the payoff line “Freddie knew what they didn’t know – that nobody’s above the law” isn’t true in real life, well it jolly well should be, shouldn’t it?
