Solid but unexceptional thriller, mainly interesting for the casting of Stallone in a role that would demand a greater acting range than normally associated with him. In fact, his character has room for most character development in the whole script, and Stallone does show he can master a range of emotions, including self pity and loathing, frustration and a longing for the unattainable. Certainly he holds his acting honours well opposite such stalwarts as the ever dependable Keitel, the showy but charismatic De Niro, and Liotta to whom here the top acting honours must go.
To be honest, the plots highly contrived, and too much is dependent on narrative exposition rather than internal verisimilitude (were constantly told what the township known as Copland is like, rather than seeing how it is through the lives of the characters living and working there), and De Neros opening and closing voiceover are a trite way to set and then wrap up the plot; but that said its an enjoyable enough ride that keeps you watching.
In the final analysis, though, it is a typical Stallone feel good movie; and although in reality the payoff line Freddie knew what they didnt know that nobodys above the law isnt true in real life, well it jolly well should be, shouldnt it?
This film is about a group of corrupt cops who make a home for themselves outside the city where they work but to get this peice and quiet they must deal with mob and thats when everything go's a little bit wrong. And stuck in the middle is freddie (stallone)local sherrif of 'copland'and he must make the decision to live the lie like his friends or turn them in. Lots of big names in the film. de'niro,Harvey Kietel, Ray Liotta not one to miss.
Stallone and a strong cast make for an interesting watchable film with a good story you can easily watch more than once.

CopLand is about a group of NYPD cops who make their home in a small New Jersey town, a place where "the law can't touch 'em." Its director, James Mangold, is yet to make a bad movie.
The film works well on every level. The dialogue is superb, and every role is filled by an outstanding actor. The cast (many of whom feature in The Sopranos) is not wasted.
The direction is tight, and the film comes to a thrilling climax. I recommend this film emphatically.

Copland is a great film, if you haven't seen it already where have you been :-) Seriously you should watch it! The actors and acting are excellent!
What great casting for this film. My two favourite actors, Robert De Niro and Ray Liotta back together on screen after the brilliant Goodfellas.
I have never been a fan of Sly Stallone but I have changed my mind after seeing him in this, he was really good.
Really convincing storyline and ending.

Cop Land stars Sly Stallone, he was just great in this movie, he plays a partially deaf New Jersery sheriff must investigate the NYPD officers he idolizes--potentially exposing the evil doings of some of New York's finest. Action-packed, tense and suspensing scenes and an all-round pretty good script. Im really glad I saw this.
this film is amazing!!!
if you havnt seen it yet add it to your rental list high priority, it has great actors in the smallest roles and thus creates a kind of all star ensemble...
nobody gets too much screen time and this definatly isnt the film your expecting if you want lots of De Niro, hes in it less than Ray Liotta (who is excellent)
this film was so good that i couldnt believe it had slipped under my radar for so many years, modern classic
9.2/10
delivers on all levels
Sly really surprised me in this movie although I did read the line up before and I wondered what the hell he was doing in it. His weight change was pretty impressive and the storyline and the cast was really good. The only reason why it gets a 3 star is because I did get a bit fed up with how dopey Sly was acting although the role did require it. Is was a good watch though!
