Bunta/ Fukusaku connection works again
By alrose (26 reviews) from Manchester , 02 Jun 2005[Highly rated reviewer]
Cops vs Thugs is another colloboration between Bunta Sugawara and Kinji Fukusaku up there with other greats (ie. scorcese/deniro, karina/godard) Similar in style to the yakuza papers and street mobster fukusaku delivers another stylish hardbitten story on par with films of america during the 1970s. The story is really a bit of a morality play with Bunta as the cop who liaises with the yakuza, drinking and socialising. The story is well written and though at times predictable the trademark 70's fukusaku photo snaps and horns etc. are still there if you enjoyed kinji's other works or even just seen Battle royale and are looking at seeing his other pieces Cops vs Thugs is highly recommended, i tried to score 3.5/5 but didnt know how to. Slick, clever, well shot japanese cinema at the other end of the spectrum from the Zatoichi flicks and Babycart series and more nouveau vague in comparison to Kurosawa's epic. Reality Japanese cinema, a must for fans of japanese cinema.- Was this review helpful to you?

(7)Dated but still interesting
By a customer from paisley , 06 Aug 2007This film seems as if it may have been trying to be innovative at the time, and the techniques are interesting in places - but it's dated and possibly won't stand the test of time. The story is quite absorbing, though, and carries the viewer along nicely, and there are some reasonable action sequences. For those interested in Japan, and that nexus of business, police and organized crime, the film is worth a look, but it doesn't probe very deeply and any serious questions raised are really just left hanging. I wanted to like this more, but couldn't really...- Was this review helpful to you?

Very Nearly Thugtastic.
By a customer from Essex England , 18 Jul 2006Not bad at all. The story is a very good one which unfortunately is bogged down by the melodramitics of people stomping around shouting and attacking innocent desks. It still was a good enough story which made me watch the ending to see how it turns out. Worth renting.- Was this review helpful to you?

Kinji Fukusaku is a master
By chungking (101 reviews) from London , 01 Feb 2006A very good film. Raw, passionate and visceral. Theres a thin line between a cop and a gangster. The main cop, Bunta Sugawara, is friends with the main gangster, Hiroki Matsukata, and the two help each other out, but when a new cop takes over the police station, one who wont stand police corruption, loyalties are tested. Its the old west, Lee Marvins gun law being taken over by James Stewarts politician. Bunta Sugawara and Hiroki Matsukatas characters are dinosaurs. Time has caught up with them and they have to make decisions about how they want to live.
Ive seen Kinji Fukusaakus Street Mobster and Ill be renting hes other early films after seeing this.- Was this review helpful to you?
