Ray Liotta is better known for his psychotic roles, but in this romantic drama he's merely the lone parental contrivance that enables housekeeper Whoopi Goldberg to get to grips with Tina Majorino, a sad little seven-year-old who has stopped speaking since the death of her mother. Goldberg and Majorino make one of the most appealing double acts of recent years and it's a shame that the conventions of the genre end up dictating the direction in which their relationship develops. As the action is set in 1959, there are some barbed comments about interracial love and the obstacles educated black women had to overcome to fulfil their potential.

A film I never tire of watching

This film is one of those movies that ALWAYS cheers you up. The three main charactors appear to be a strange combination but they work really well together, especially the cute child and Goldberg. Goldberg gets to show the softer side of her acting, albeit in a slightly reluctant manner - it all adds to the charm of the movie. Liotta also steps away from his usual role to take on that of loving father. This film has plenty of heartwarming moments and if you haven't seen it already and you want to watch a nice easy to view film that has a good plot and great actors... rent it!
