Except that the novel on which this film is based was set in Texas so this transplant is a decision of the director (presumably). I had no problem with that and there was clearly some amusement to be had at the ridiculous behaviours of the French colonials. It was a refreshing change from the antics of our own colonial ancestry. This is a black comedy, of course, so if you object to killings committed in response to personal ridicule you had probably better give this a miss. My main problem was the erratic direction from Tavernier that left some plot points obscure and the film about 30 minutes too long.
