Michael Winterbottom directs the premiere episode of the highly regarded CRACKER series, starring Robbie Coltrane as Dr. Eddie 'Fitz' Fitzgerald, a highly intelligent and volatile forensic psychologist with a penchant for alcohol and gambling. While Fitz's bad habits may interfere with his private life, they do not stop him from outsmarting the cleverest criminals in Britain. This time around, Fitz finds himself caught up in the middle of a messy ordeal when a woman's brutally murdered body is found on a train and the prime suspect claims amnesia. It is up to Fitz to figure out if the man is guilty of the heinous crime, or if he actually is innocent, as the suspect so passionately professes. As the boozing, hardheaded investigator, Coltrane jumps into his role with great fervor, establishing a character that is at once funny, troubled, and never less than passionate.

This is the first of the series of 10 Cracker episodes which when televised in the early 1990s became unmissable viewing. Starting again from the beginning I found episode 1 a bit slow going. It concentrates on his battle to win over the police in allowing him to help with a murder investigation when it is quite obvious that he is on the right track and everyone else on the wrong and refusing to listen. Still, with hindsight of how he becomes invaluable to his colleagues in later episodes and yet they never really accept him, it is only to be expected. This is a good, gritty police drama with no holds barred, and not for younger viewers because of explicit scenes which were quite a breakthough in their day. It is a pity they never went on to make more than 10 but I read at the time that Robbie Coltrane was spending too much time away from home and his family in making them. Such a shame because very little of TV drama comes up to this standard these days.
