Drenched in blood and bad taste, this homage to The Cabinet of Dr Caligari and the Amicus portmanteau pic, Asylum, chronicles the crimes of a cannibalistic hypnotist and his lugubrious henchman. Shot on high-resolution video against the backdrop of some quintessentially British locations, this gore quartet revels in its scabrous portrait of a decadent society in which no depravity is deemed excessive and no one is immune from an obsession with self-gratification. Harking back to the innocent days of the video nasty, without ever quite over-stepping the bounds of decency, this is still definitely not for the squeamish or the humourless.
I have to admit that I wanted to see this movie for 2 major reasons:
1) It just looked so bad that I thought it would be worth a laugh
2) It starred Dani Filth.
Anyway, after a lot of arguing with my taste and suffistication I decided to give it a go and I loved it.
It's not a good movie by anyones standards. The acting is drama class stuff and the writing, direction and editing don't come off much better. But then, if you rent this I don't think you're really too bothered about these things. What you do get is a film that helps pass a couple of hours well enough.
I happen to like 'bad' films so I found this enjoyable. Of the 4 stories the first 1 has acting so bad it makes your toes curl until you get used to it but still manages to be enjoyable. The last story is definately the best, although the twist is blindingly obvious. All 4 parts are linked by a story of revenge and black magic and when it does come, the final good vs evil showdown is hilarious. Okay for a horror film it's not scary and the effects are quite bad but that's not everything.
At the end of the day if you're looking for a well made, well acted movie go for something else. But if you're after some mindless fun give this a go. You never know......you just might like it.
OK, So this is basically alternative Britains answer to 'Creepshow' or perhaps 'Tales from the crypt'. And it kinda works. But, Having said that, there is something very wrong with this film. It's not the dodgy effects or the questionable acting - no. It's the way it's shot. It just looks and feels like a student film. Kinda like low budget films made in the 90's that looked like eisodes of 'baywatch', it just doesn't have that 'movie' feel to it.
Perhaps some film student can enlighten me on this subject, (35mm film perhaps) but it just looks cheap to me, Like some guy just bought a new HD camera and decided to make a film. Nothing against that mind. Hey, it got this far. But the stories are far better than the film. One of note is the 'Sick Room' vignette. So twisted you should forget about the production values and just enjoy the sick ride!
And that's the problem, so many good stories, but all done in a really sh#t way. All i'll say is, don't be fooled into thinking this is something special, but enjoy it for what it is - a low budget brit flick with some great ideas. And Emily Booth is as awesome as ever.
Oh yeah, that guy from 'Cradle of filth' is in it too.
