They love Lucy.

Don't know why I haven't seen this one before, being an admirer of Banderas and also the delightful Melanie Griffiths. Anyway, it's certainly too good to miss, with a great performance by Melanie as Lucy, an abused wife and mother who finally cracks under the strain, decapitates her old man and - leaving her five children with her mother - heads for Hollywood, determined to make a name for herself in her favourite TV programme. Meanwhile, back at home in Alabama, racial issues come to a head, involving everyone, including her own kids.
Lucy's strike for freedom from opression plus the black versus white issues, are central to this otherwise highly amusing movie. Rod Steiger puts in an OTT performance as the town judge with a soft spot for Melanie and there is some seriously good acting from the kids. Altogether a very entertaining film and one that Banderas the director can be proud of.- Was this review helpful to you?

Moving
By a customer from Leatherhead, Surrey , 07 Aug 2007I have just finished watching this for the second time round, once was years ago and was so glad to see it again. A all round brilliant story with a good dose of humour. This story showed that morals reigned supreme at the end.- Was this review helpful to you?

Black Comedy
By crispin40 (553 reviews) from Stirling, Scotland , 23 Jun 2005Watching this a week after seeing 'Boycott' and with the present BBC series about black civil rights workers, (also hearing just now on the news the results of the court case about the real man behind the Mossippi burning incidents), I feel my life is being taken along a civil rights movement theme. However, this film is much more fun and less serious than the others. Melanie Griffiths does a Marilyn Monroe/Judy Garland/ Audrey Hepburn piece of OTT acting whilst the supporting cast is good. Especially noticeable are the young Lucas Black as Pee Joe and Robert Wagner as the judge. Once again - a fun film with various quite serious messages.
Looking for more like this in the future.- Was this review helpful to you?
