We see so many youngsters waving batons these days that it was refreshing to see one of the all-time greats, the late Sir Georg Solti, putting Haydn's Creation through its paces. Personally I would rather see it performed in the fractured English in which I have sung in it several times, but the trend nowadays is for it to be sung in German. The performance would have benefited from subtitles since a lot of the recitatives have marvellous words - the 'flexible tiger' and '...creeps with sinuous trace the worm' - spring to mind. But the performance was good middle-of-the road stuff with no obvious flaws. All the soloists were good and the large chorus performed Solti's mainly brisk speeds with gusto, though as often the sopranos tended to be swamped by the lower parts. If you're looking for a baroque style performance with period instruments, then look elsewhere. But I enjoyed this greatly.
Excellent interpretation of this magnificent work. Sound is fairly good, good , clear picture quality via a Denon home cinema set up. Don't know any of the soloists but then who does these days. They are however a solid European group with the excellent forces of the Bavarian Rundfunks to compliment Solti's fask-neck tempo's. Overall 3.5 out of 5.
