This is, as it says, Haydyn's masterpiece
but, it is also a masterpiece of world music dimensions.
Little more can be said....Pure Ecstacy !!!
First let me say I have never come across such a disgracefully bare DVD. Extras? No. Scene selection? No. The only option is between the 3 parts of the oratorio. There are no subtitles, no movement headings, yet bizarrely we are given a language option at the beginning, which, since the oratorio is sung in German, seems superfluous. Most disgraceful of all there is no indication of the performers or location. This is unforgiveable. This is all a pity since the performance is rather good. The soloists (Edith Mathis, looking much younger than her age of 54 when the recording was made in 1992, Christoph Pregardien and Rene Pape) are all outstandingly good and the Scottish Chamber Orchestra is excellent. The former tenor Peter Schreier conducts sensitively, with mainly steady speeds, though never excessively so. The Lucerne Festival Chorus, who seem to be kept standing up throughout the entire performance, poor souls, sound slightly underpowered in the lower parts. But all in all this is a fine performance. Pity about the presentation!
