Based on Jeremy Leven's novel, this jumbled comedy drama involves a Nobel Prize-winning scientist turned college professor who tries to resurrect his long-dead wife via cloning. Peter O'Toole brings his customary God-like grandeur to the lead role, complemented by the young, amiable supporting cast that includes Mariel Hemingway, Virginia Madsen and Vincent Spano. The film's chief handicap is an excess of soap opera-style plot strands: the intervention of O'Toole's scientist rival (David Ogden Stiers), a pair of budding romances and an incurable illness. Naturally, they all intertwine in the implausible finale.
