Stephen Herek, later to hit the jackpot with Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure, directs a cheeky smash-and-grab raid on Gremlins and comes up with a crude but entertaining horror comedy. The critters of the title are a race of nasty hedgehog-like alien creatures who invade a small American town and proceed to wreak havoc until two intergalactic bounty hunters arrive to save the day. The cast, which includes Dee Wallace Stone, M Emmet Walsh and a young Billy Zane, remains stoically straight-faced throughout, the creatures nab the best lines (in subtitles), and Herek keeps his tongue stuck firmly in his cheek. It went on to spawn three sequels.
The Critters in question, aliens escaping from a space prison, are rolling amok in the small town of Grovers Bend,... read more on Time Out
The release of the Critters films onto DVD has been a long time coming, but they've finally made it to the UK. I used to love these films when I was younger and I'm pleased to say that they are just as much fun now. The first film shows the Critters escape from a prison asteroid from which they manage to make their way to Earth. Upon landing in the small town of Grovers Bend, they do what Critters do best... EAT!!! But unfortunately for us, humans (and chickens!!) are first on the menu. This film is pure 80's sillyness and is so enjoyable because of it. To be fair the acting is pretty good, for what is essentially a B movie, and there are quite a few funny moments mixed in as well that help the film along. The best thing about Critters is that it never tries to take itself seriously and the Crites are by far the best characters in the film - in fact, my only real criticism would be that the Critters don't play a big enough part. Definitely worth a watch if you like rather silly comedy horrors - think Gremlins but with more fur!!!
These little things are so evil its great! Its along the lines of the gremlins but way way way more evil. This is a good watch, you can see that its an old film so dont expect any amazing effects or steven spielburg work. But this is definately one to be watched.
Its more laughable than scary because we are now used to the modern day horror. But this is definately a must see. Just to have a laugh!
For those thinking of staying in this weekend, there is a whole host of new DVD releases to choose from. With the warm weather officially gone, it's time for all those summer blockbusters to come out. First up is box-office behemoth The Da Vinci Code, starring Tom Hanks as a university professor who is drawn into a murder mystery led by odd clues and mid-bending puzzles. Based on the smash-hit novel and directed by Ron Howard, The Da Vinci code also stars Paul Bettany and Sir Ian McKellen. Next Read more
