Crossroads

Pop sensation Britney Spears makes her film debut in this sparkling teen road-trip adventure. Spears stars as Lucy, the beautiful valedictorian of her small Georgia hometown who has lost touch with her childhood best friends Mimi (Taryn Manning), a boyish trailer park sweetheart who happens to be pregnant, and Kit (Zoe Saldana) a luxury-obsessed overachiever who dreams of marrying her older boyfriend. Although it seems that they are all headed in separate directions, Mimi's planned cross-country trip to Los Angeles in hopes of securing a recording contract brings the old friends together for a life-altering adventure. Lucy's own dream of reuniting with her estranged mother (Kim Cattral), who abandoned her and her auto mechanic father (Dan Aykroyd) when Lucy was only three, propels the normally cautious Lucy to take part and together they hit the road, chauffeured by Mimi's handsome loner friend Ben (Anson Mount). Their journey is plagued with many seemingly insurmountable difficulties, beginning with major car troubles that cost the girls all of their money to fix. However, they are able to raise more than enough money to pay for the repairs in a karaoke competition where Lucy (in Britney form) wows the crowd with a sexy rendition of Joan Jett's "I Love Rock 'n Roll." As the young girls head towards Los Angeles in Ben's 1973 Buick convertible they face love, heartache, and loss while distancing themselves from childhood innocence in this heartwarming coming-of-age tale filled with plenty of moments for megastar Britney to shine.

    Despite its naive, picture-postcard view of America, this showcase for teen singing sensation Britney Spears is hard to dislike. It's obviously targeted at her core audience of impressionable young girls and so addresses the topics that are of paramount importance to them: seeking independence from parents, spending time with friends and dealing with the hormonal imbalance called love. Simplistic in the extreme but not without charm, the film sees Spears and childhood friends Zoë Saldana and Taryn Manning on a road trip of discovery. Along the way, she belts out a few tunes (via in-car sing-a-longs and a karaoke contest), while the trio rediscover the true importance of friendship. If you can cope with the high cheese factor, director Tamra Davis's rose-tinted movie is a mildly engaging journey through adolescent problem-page dilemmas, with natural, pleasing performances from Britney Spears and the girls, supported by experienced elders Dan Aykroyd and, briefly, Kim Cattrall.

    superb..................

    this dvd is superb. my daughter's loved it. Crossroads begins with three young girls, Lucy (Britney Spears), Mimi (Taryn Manning) and Kit (Zoe Saldana), who are all about 10 years old and the best of friends. They decide to bury their 'box of dreams' one night, and made a pact to dig it up at midnight, on the night of their high school graduation. Eight years on and graduation day is fast approaching. The three girls have since fallen out, and grown apart. They all have different friends, and different outlooks on life;

    Lucy is a real daddy's girl, Mimi is a tom boy and Kit is self obssessed about her looks, and one of the most popular girls in the school.

    At midnight on graduation day, they all reluctantly arrive at the spot, where they buried their 'box of dreams.'

    Lucy digs up the soil in her high heels and prom dress, and roots through their personal items, that they placed in the box, eight years previously.

    Lucy wants to meet her mum, who abandoned her and her father (Dan Ackroyd) when she was only three years old.

    Kit wants to meet up with her boyfriend who she plans to marry next year.

    And Mimi is auditioning for a record deal.

    Lucy and Kit agree to tag along with Mimi, on a road trip across the US, not knowing that they will re-discover the friendship that they lost almost a decade ago.

    Their driver is Ben (Anson Mount), a gorgeous guy, who Lucy falls for instantly, but doesn't let on until much later in the movie.

    Along with $486, a clapped out car and their dreams, they set off on a road-trip of a lifetime to re-discover, re-kindle and re-evaluate their friendships and lives.

    well worth watching.
