Following the success of Cruel Intentions, Roger Kumble was planning to make a TV series called Manchester Prep. However, the show was cancelled before its first two episodes were even aired. So Kumble stitched them together to make this shamelessly steamy prequel to his teenpic reworking of Dangerous Liaisons, in which a feckless playboy has to choose between true love and impressing his cynical stepsister. With Robin Dunne, Amy Adams and Sarah Thompson stepping into the roles vacated by Ryan Phillippe, Sarah Michelle Gellar and Reese Witherspoon, it atones in Melrose Place nastiness for what it lacks in star wattage.
this film has been widely criticised, but it is just really good fun, and surprisingly enjoyable.
it is true, that there is not anyone as well-known as Ryan Phillipe or Sarah Michelle Gellar in it, and the character of Sebastian does seem rather dull and bland at first, then you realise that the whole point of this sequel (or should i say prequel, - this takes place several years before, the malicious movie starring Sarah Michelle Gellar as Kathryn), is to show how he became the ruthless obsessive we know from the original, and needless to say, it's all down to his scheming step-sister.
It follows the lives of rich step siblings Sebastian Valmont and Kathryn Merteuil, as they playfully manipulate the people surrounding them, at their exclusive New York prep school.
Keri Lynn Pratt plays the hilarious Cherie Claymon, the ditzy airhead, with the nervous hiccough that Kathryn sets out to ruin.
The film is nicely shot around New Hampshire and New York - the scenes around the school are particularly good, and provide some great comedy, as the lengths to which Kathryn is prepared to go to, to avoid her gym lessons are revealed.
you also get to sit in, on a late-night loft meeting of the secret society, that Kathryn has set up, to 'hound out the poor kids and geeks'.
the tagline for this movie is - Seduce and Destroy.
watch it, and then form your own opinion, on the films strengths and weaknesses.
I have seen this one and the first and personally I preffered the first.I had a hard job to believe the characters in this one was supposed to be the same as in the first . Probably due to the fact that none of the original cast is even in it. I didn't think that the cast pulled this one off as well as the first and would not watch this one again.
