Excellent film!
By a customer from Winchester, England , 16 Jul 2004[Highly rated reviewer]
This film portrays brutality and oppression without gratuitous violence. Moreover, it tells an interesting piece of history that might otherwise escape most of us.
There is a curious balance between justice and injustice in the apartheid regime of South Africa, and Steve Biko treads the knife edge of the law to inspire his black countrymen to respect themselves. He earns the grudging respect of a white journalist, who feels compelled to write his story.
Excellent performances from Denzel Washington and Kevin Kline.- Was this review helpful to you?

(35)Dicky At his Best
By buffyrules (335 reviews) from southend on sea , 02 Oct 2012I saw this in the cinema as a teenager and it stayed with me since. Time has not done it too many favours but the message is portrayed intelligently and post apartheid it still of course resonates. Washington proving in his first lead role that he was born to play gritty, charasmatic and challenging roles. This is still one of his best.- Was this review helpful to you?

WWW (Well Worth Watching)
By Emjay69 (327 reviews) from Kidlington, Oxford , 17 Nov 2011Tremendous stuff. During the late 70s, where this film is set, I had obviously heard of Steve Biko, but I was living a wayward sort of life and I considered him to be the proverbial pain. Today, after watching this film, I salute him.
It's an enormous production which is worth the 150 minutes of time that it runs for. If you haven't watched it, do so NOW!- Was this review helpful to you?

Cry Freedom and friendship
By a customer , 12 Jun 2011This was a very real and thought provoking film detailing how different communities live in the mist of anti-apartheid.
It challanges the attitudes to acceptance and the fight for justice.
I can see why this film got academy awards. Denzel Washington was brillant, and so Kevin Kline.
I liked the way the film followed, due to its direction, the screenplay supported the words and acting. by Denzel Washington seemlessly.
These important elements added to the impact of this true story.
I liked the way the tables were turned, so that a white person could see and understand what black people have had to endure. I was plessantly surprised at how many other famous people had cameo parts in this film. I would highly recommend this film- Was this review helpful to you?

Cry Freedom
By a customer from london , 21 Feb 2010Doesn't fail to make me cry when the scene for Steve Biko's funeral is played out. One of the best roles Kevin Kline has ever played, forget the comedy in A Fish Called Wanda, this film proves he is a serious actor- Was this review helpful to you?
