This is a real oddity of a film - part thriller, part psychological drama set against a backdrop of post-Vietnam tensions.

Jeff Bridges plays Rich Bone, a perma-tanned boat salesman hell bent on bedding every woman in the Santa Barbara area. John Heard is Cutter, his one-eyed, one-armed, one-legged Vietnam veteran friend and Lisa Eichorn is Mo, Cutter's neglected, alcholic wife.

When Bone witnesses a murder, he identifies a rich oil baron as the suspect but is reluctant to pursue him. Cutter, bitter at a society which sent him to war and then cast him off, takes up the pursuit, eager to bring the powerful suspect to justice. As Cutter becomes more and more obsessed, he begins to alienate those around him even further and his life is sucked into a dangerous, downward spiral.

This is an uncomprising, difficult film to watch - it's slow in parts, ludicrous in others but mesmerising throughout. I can guarantee you'll either love it or hate it but either way it will stay with you for some time. John Heard's performance is extraordinary and is worth the rental alone.

Obviously you're not a golfer. If you were there would be more pot and the angry 'Walter' character would have some lines about 'Nam. This film has one of the best endings I have ever seen. Worth it for that alone.

Pants. Seemed very dated. Characters awful, unless you like listening to a one eyed drunk shouting. Wouldn't consider it as a thriller. Avoid.

An intriguing oddity. This is the way indy Hollywood almost went, until directors re-discovered how to make interesting big budget movies, and along came CGI.

Wonderfully perverse in having no likable characters at all. Some good moments despite this - the confrontation with the neighbour over the crashed car on the front lawn is funnily awful, for example.

But the 'hero on a white charger' at the end gives the game away - this film wants to have its cake and eat it: against the system, while indulging in the excesses it offers.

It's hip movie thriller that somewhat betrays its low key upper class credentials. That is until the end when things get to the point.

Dark, languid, highlighting complex emotions, asking whats the point of it all, and an effective thriller to boot. What more could you really want?
