I expected a quirky romantic comedy, but this really is far more. It shows a degree of ambition that such films don't and as it goes further, starts pulling out surprise after surprise.
The ending in particular was *stunning* and one which I genuinely didn't see coming.
I bought the film straight after watching and it hasn't left my mind since, along with the feeling that this will be a film I grow to further adore all the more in the future.
Another Japanese film, this time about a cyborg sent back in time to protect someone. It's a romantic comedy with extremely heavy sci-fi elements and it works well both ways. The rom-com stuff is fairly standard - quirky, cute and touching in places but the sci-fi really elevates it, both in the scenes and interactions that come with the cyborg's special abilities and also in its use of themes surrounding technology and loneliness/human interaction.
