Exuberant version of the romantic French classic, using the rhymed couplets of the original. The English subtitles, in a rhyming translation by Anthony Burgess, are a distraction, though.
"...[Depardieu's performance is his] own magical achievement. It is expansive, funny, gross, dainty, and always humane....[It] finds surprising new life in a theatrical antique..."
Poor picture quality and audio (only 2-channel) does not do justice to this masterpiece. It was obviously amateur night at Tartan Video when they mastered it.
The script is a classic from the French literature and if your command of french is good enough, you will be delighted by the poetry.
The story is also a classic of the black romantic genre that will leave you heartbroken.
As for the finale, there is probably one of the best scene of cinema ever with Mr Depardieu at his best.
If you've seen the bland and syrupy Green Card, forget it and watch the master at his best in Cyrano.
