"...A barnstorming performance by Dennis Quaid..."
this film blows in a biblical way, which is a shame really as the storyline isnt actually that bad.the direction is bad, the script is worse and it tries to come across as dark and moody, which it does with a degree of success, as by the time i had finished watching it i was in a bad mood for the rest of the day.daniel stern and dennis quaid, who are usually two very talented actors, actually look bored filming this horrendous flick.please save yourself the effort of getting off the couch to put this dvd in your machine.
I quite like this movie. It?s not particularly good but it does have some good elements, although it does have some cringeworthy moments and the music doesn?t help!
The opening 1/3 of the movie builds up quite nicely into a moody thriller, with the setting being a university (college) campus presumably somewhere in California and it?s the Christmas season with a heat-wave. A kid in the class of professor Dex (Quaid) commits suicide, his wife serves divorce papers on him and his colleagues start to criticize the fact that he hasn?t written a book in 4 years. Professor Dex then goes on a bender drinking whiskey, egg-nog, champagne, martini?s (a good concoction) and then wakes up in a college girl?s (Meg Ryan) dorm room to find out that he was slipped a slow acting poison during the previous night?s drinking binge.
And it?s Meg Ryan that ruins this movie. This is obviously the period where Ryan and Quaid were happily married but the later marital problems could be evident here as they are acting in two totally different movies. Quaid and most of the rest of the cast are trying to pull off a moody thriller with a relatively weak plotline while Ryan seems to think she?s in some kind of thriller rom-com like ?The Harry met Sally Murder Mystery?. Just as the movie takes a mildly interesting plot turn, up pops Ryan to add a cooky-girly aspect to the whole proceedings and it just messes the whole thing up.
It?s worth a look, Quaid is at his underrated usual good standard, there are two plot threads, the first is quite interesting and engaging the second is weak and shoddy. The music is typical bad 80?s but Quaid?s other half is the real let down, they should have slipped her some fast acting poison just before cameras started rolling.
