Since they were adapted by Raymond Longford in the silent era and Ken G Hall in the late 1930s, the cod memoirs of Steele Rudd (written pseudonymously by Arthur Hoey) have fallen out of favour with Australian film-makers. Lampooning the caricature of the ocker Aussie, this revival not only reflects the nation's burgeoning self-image, but also reveals just how far cinema Down Under has come since the original series were produced. Leo McKern and Geoffrey Rush are ideally teamed as the Queenslanders striving to make the most of their unyielding farm, while Joan Sutherland provides the sense betwixt the bluster.
maybe it was supposed to be, but it was excruciating to watch, difficult to hear (lots of mumbling and poor sound quality).
Listen to the old radio serial on which this was based instead!
I quite enjoyed this although I didn't think I would. For some reason I had assumed this movie was set in the present and not the Nineteeth Century.
Dad and Dave is described as a comedy which it is but don't expect any belly laughs. It's all very gentle and wholesome stuff with the backdrop of the Aussie outback as a nice bonus.
