    A Master Class in Dance

As a child, years ago, I read the novel 'Daddy Long Legs' by Jean Webster and thought the book was wonderful. It is the story is of Julie, (Leslie Caron) a cute orphan girl who is sponsored to go to College by playboy Jervis Pendleton 111, who is young, filthy rich and being played by Fred Astaire. Pendleton wants his generosity, in sponsoring Jule, to remain annonymous but asks that she sends letters periodically to an office relating her progress. Julie see a shadow of a man leaving the College whom she believes to be her mystery sponsor. As it is only a shadow she sees, the man seems to have extraordinary long legs. So her lettes to him always start Dear Daddy Long Legs. The film only resembles the book - and it has to be said the film is pretty to watch with plenty of the old 'feel good' factor - But, 'Oh dear!!!' the over long dream/dance sequences are too much and typically fifties style. That said, Astaire is still magic at the 'dancing'
