Sniping at the inanity of designer pop, this futuristic animé was scripted and scored by electronica duo Daft Punk and realised by veteran Japanese creative artist Leiji Matsumoto. The story of a four-piece combo's abduction from its own planet to be reprogrammed and repackaged as the all-conquering Crescendolls by a malevolent tycoon is ably told without dialogue and includes some nimble montage sequences that expose and parody the excesses of the music business. But the soundtrack too often stands apart from comic-book action, which is disappointingly bereft of sophistication and character depth. Sadly, the whole thing just ends up playing like the video for a misguided concept album.
Discovery - an awesome album! One of the best, but what happened to the film? I'm not saying don't rent this - do rent it, but don't expect anything other than an obvious story with a cop-out ending. In fact, maybe my expectation was too high!
Visually impressive and obviously has a great soundtrack but not really any good if you want to sit down and watch a film.
Being a Daft Punk fan, I was looking forward to seeing this movie, but I had no idea what I was up for.
The album 'Discovery' had been on my 'to listen to' list for sometime, so when I heard about this DVD, I figured It was worth a try...
The movie itself is set to the album, which plays in order throughout the film, posing as a soundtrack, whilst the visual element of the movie is played over it.
Not only does the movie top the individual tracks from the album, it enhances them, building a story from the already fantastic music!
Each track can still stand alone, with it's visual narrative. Each chapter of the DVD is a seperate song.
To all fans of cartoon animation, and of Daft Punk, I seriously suggest this DVD. I intend to buy myself a copy and I'm sure that you'll enjoy it as much as I have.
5/5 stars!
