Louis Malle, directing his first English-language film since his return from America to France, employs an almost leisurely (but always exact) camera to highlight the emotional centre of this traumatic tale. Taken from Josephine Hart's bestseller by scriptwriter David Hare, the explosion of emotion is muted by moments of implausibility, caused by some widely varying acting styles. Whereas Miranda Richardson crumbles believably as the spurned wife, Juliette Binoche, as the object of an MP's lust, simply pouts seductively, while Jeremy Irons, as the naughty politician, spends too much time behaving like a startled rabbit.

  • "...Malle's sumptuous DAMAGE casts a true erotic spell; it is one of the few films in recent years to evoke the dizzying pull of sexual obsession from the inside out..."

    Compelling erotic drama

'Damage' is the story of Stephen Fleming(Jeremy Irons) a member of parliament who seems to have it all, supportive wife, succesful son, great career prospects. However, when he meets Anna(Juliette Binoche) he willingly risks it all as they begin a passionate affair. Matters are further complicated by the fact that Anna is about to marry Fleming's son.

Louis Malle's drama is a blistering examination of a man giving in to lust. Malle doesn't explain the source of their attraction and simply follows their increasingly torrid and obsessive affair, which has devastating consequences. Irons and Binoche have meaty roles to get their teeth into here and respond with the kind of performances we've come to expect from these excellent actors. Miranda Richardson is also superb as Fleming's bewildered wife.

Malle avoids being too explicit and instead concentrates on the psychological and emotional impact of the relationship. The result is a powerful, daring, superbly acted drama.

    Ok for soft porn

Movie is a bit sick if you think that your father is giving your fiancee one.

When I interviewed the lovely Juliette Binoche at the Toronto Film Festival in September 06, she told me she had films lined up with the Taiwanese filmmaker Hou Hsaio-hsien (Flight of the Red Balloon will be released later this year); the Israeli Amos Gitai (Disengagement); the Frenchmen Olivier Assayas and Cedric Klapisch (Summer Time and Paris will also likely reach UK cinemas later this year); Argentine Santiago Amigorena; Iranian Abbas Kiarostami; and Cambodian Rithy Pran. Oh, and she was... Read more
