I was intrigued by this film for 2 reasons: 1) the real woman it is based on, Ruth Ellis, was at the centre of a highly important murder trial that resulted in the end of the execution punishment in British law (when she was sentenced to be hanged, the public support for her was surprisingly overwhelming); 2) it is the first film to star one of my favourite actresses, Miranda Richardson.

It didn't disappoint, although if I hadn't known as much as I did about the real case, I may not have enjoyed it as much. The fascinating element to this film is in watching Miranda Richardson make an essentially unlikeable character entirely sympathetic, so that by the end, you pretty much hate Rupert Everett, and would like to kill him yourself. The film is very British, very post-war, and in that sense, very accurate; but mostly I enjoyed it for the performance of Miranda Richardson, in a career-making role.

Strong performance by Miranda Richardson as the last woman to be hanged in the UK. Rupert Everett is suitably maddening as the fickle toff who drives Ruth Ellis beyond despair. Not a very heartening tale but a well made British film nevertheless. Lacks something though – dramatic tension perhaps.

This is the film that catipulted Miranda Richardson to public acclaim. Before she was queenie in Blackadder she was Ruth Ellis. Her performance in this film is quite spellbinding. She captures the insecurity lying underneath the peroxide and all that bravado. You feel for her as she loses control and you know she can't stop her life careering toward its doom. This film is worth watching for her performance alone.

The tragic tale of Ruth Ellis - last woman hanged in England - and her lover David Blakey. Excellent performances by Miranda Richardson as Ruth and the very excellent Rupert Everett too! If you like Rupert Everett look for Another Country (1981) also....
