    [Highly rated reviewer]

This is an amazing film. A realist musical: you get the shaky hand-held camerawork, all understatement and naturalist dialogue, then the whole screen bursts into a song and dance routine. What's amazing is that the juxtaposition of those two styles doesn't seem laboured or cynical. At times almost a deconstruction of the Wizard of Oz, it both plays with and subverts the musical genre. Bjork's songs are great, and the ending left the entire cinema sobbing. Yes, it's melodramatic in places and it pulls on the heartstrings occasionally in the most manipulative of ways. And yes, as usual, Von Trier grinds his female leads into the ground. But this is fine, fine stuff.

It's a challenging film, so don't bother watching if you're looking for something to occupy your eyes whilst you're focussing on the popcorn.

  • The worst camera ever!

The camera keep moving all the time. It looks so amateurish. I couldn't watch it for more than 5 minutes. I checked some later sequences but it is all the same. It's very disturbing.

  • Heart-rending masterpiece about the corruption of innocence

    Rated - 5.0 stars

The tragic character of Selma is so beautifully constructed. The way von Trier creates someone so diligent, fragile and innocent is outstanding. This is partly due to an intimate (at times claustrophobic) style of direction and a breath-taking performance by Bjork. Also the ethereal use of song is both poignantly sad and enchanting and adds to the drama of the film.

Dancer in the Dark is the most distressing and saddening film I have ever seen. Although I give this film 5 stars it is nonetheless with a heavy heart; the Hardy-esque bleaknessone feels as the film progresses is not very pleasant.

Wow, bit of an emotional journey but well worth it. Wonderful performances from Bjork and Deneuve. Never heard of this before and stumbled upon it by accident - will now recommend to everyone. Not really a fan of musicals, but this is just different on every score. Beautifully sad.

  • beautiful but flawed

weird isnt it how you could give a film four stars and equally have found it difficult going. like in other of his films, the directors interest in main characters (bjork) with a childlike naivety is a central theme - something which many viewers may find unbelievable and thus hard to relate to.

there are parts of brilliance here - the stylised and stripped down dance routines, the musical within a musical, bjork and deneuve's performances. bearing in mind the film is now 12 years old, it has kept its poignancy and hasn't dated (aided by being a period piece).

there are disappointing parts - some of main characters can act but not sing (bjorks love interest) or sing but not dance (bjork).

i kept with it and i think therein lies the film's flaw. it drags. theres a story here and its well told but it doesnt justify a 2 hour 15 minute run time.
