Based on a cult comic strip, this mix of fantasy and madcap criminality is directed with mischievous glee by horror specialist Mario Bava. Utilising stylised sets and encouraging his multi-national cast to camp it up something rotten, Bava arrives at a Barbarella-style romp, a comparison that is reinforced by the presence of John Phillip Law as the master criminal who curries favour with the populace by destroying Italy's tax records. The finale, with its radioactive gold shower, is justifiably famous, and the press conference given by pompous minister Terry-Thomas, under the influence of laughing gas, is riotously funny.

    Fun but not Bava's best.

Director Mario Bava was a huge success in his native Italy, he directed films in every genre and gave birth to the Giallo that would in later years become the American Slasher. Danger - Diabolik is a rather odd film to review, it's a comicbook brought to life. It is visually stunning and generally has great performances all round. It is however let down by a rather stuffy English dub. There isn't that much dialogue anyway, so try and watch it with the Italian dub it fits much better.
