Enjoyable romp
By a customer from Scotland , 22 Jul 2005[Highly rated reviewer]
Enjoyed the settings and cinematography of this film, basic poor girl unable to marry rich guy. Not much employment at the time - so becomes a courtesan. It is not at all high brow or trying to be other than it is - an enjoyable romp- Was this review helpful to you?

(21)Period drama with humour, romance and a story
By a customer , 18 Jul 2012Excellent, feel good film with humour and romance, watched it years ago, and when i found it again, enjoyed it just as much second time round, Catherine McCormack is truely beautiful, and Rufus Sewell and Oliver Platt add to the intrigue.- Was this review helpful to you?

Pointless and insipid
By Drichansa (33 reviews) from London , 04 Jul 2012There's no real drama or tension, the dialogue is bland, and what story there is is preposterous. A courtesan saves the day in every major historical event of her era, from securing an alliance against the Turks to encouraging Venice to make a stand against the Inquisition. She doesn't actually cure the plague, but she does strike a blow for feminism by behaving like a time-traveller from a very different culture (ie 21st century USA). Must have been a nice holiday for cast and crew, though.- Was this review helpful to you?

By ab64 (42 reviews) from suffolk , 09 Jan 2012a true story apparently. Gorgeous venice scenery... sumptuous costumes etc. An entertaining love story with the plague and witchcraft trials to boot.- Was this review helpful to you?

Could have been great, but is truly terrible
By blackpoolmatt (12 reviews) from Manchester , 06 Dec 2011What an astonishingly bad film. The dialogue is appalling, which is a huge problem as the narrative depends on the wit and repartee between the characters, and the acting, sadly given the cast, is wooden, which all comes down to the dreadful direction, full of soft-focus close-ups and dramatic romantic music at every possible moment. It's a shame, because the subject matter is there for a very good film, exploring the sexual politics of 16th-century Venice. That's what it tries to do, but falls short; although it nearly comes together at the end, it's let down by a laughable Dead Poets' Society ending. Catherine McCormack is beautiful though...- Was this review helpful to you?

Dangerous Beauty!!??
By a customer from Bath , 30 Dec 2009Loved this film - definitely for the girls - i originally watched this back in 1998 in the cinema, but sure it was called 'the honest courtesan'...but suppose its new title is a little more gripping!!- Was this review helpful to you?
