    Enjoyable romp

Enjoyed the settings and cinematography of this film, basic poor girl unable to marry rich guy. Not much employment at the time - so becomes a courtesan. It is not at all high brow or trying to be other than it is - an enjoyable romp

    Absolutely beautiful!

Beautifully written and wonderfully acted, Catherine McCormack successfully portrays Veronica Franco, a courtesan in 16th Century Venice hopelessly in love with the one man she can't have. She portrays the gentleness, vulnerability and passion that Veronica possesses and was completely enchanting. The costumes are dazzling and the script, emotively written.

I would definitely recommend this to anyone and highly enjoyed it!

    Stunning...

Absolutely beautifully made film, I'd watch it for the cinematography alone but thankfully it's got a great story line with Veronica Franco making an early stand for womens' rights.

This film was originally titled The Honest Courtesan so some fans like me may have been confused. Fantastic film with lots of lovely weepy moments. Tissues ready girls!

    Pain pain pain - avoid

The single most awful film I've ever had the misfortune to see in my entire life. Although the comedy factor is considerable.

A very good quality historical drama with inspiring universal themes.

I enjoyed the second half of the film the most. The first half sustained my interest, but it had a strained, light humour and a sense of hollow spectacle: it seemed aimed at a prudish audience with a liking for superficial, gaudy costume dramas. Some of the acting was quite self-conscious, as if some were winking and saying: 'look at our courtly manners and costumes; listen to our Shakespearian-like speech!' The sweeping, romantic music seemed like an overstatement, almost as if witnessing Tchaikovsky's soaring Romeo and Juliet theme in a wax works. I did not find the female lead (or her mother) charming or alluring, and neither conveyed serious intelligence. I did not see why certain characters fell in love with each other (as is usual for films) in the beginning--for what qualities of character? However, the second half really picked up in all respects: more depth of characterization, the plot tightened, and some very important historical and universal themes were brought into focus. Two themes were the dangers of church and state not being separated, and the importance of standing up for what one senses to be the truth.
