With an entire romantic subplot involving Andy Garcia ending up on the cutting-room floor, this schoolroom drama may have gained a singularity of purpose, but it definitely lost a much-needed release from the intensity of the classroom crusade. Never quite convincing as either an ex-marine or a teacher, Michelle Pfeiffer nevertheless turns in a solid performance as she tries to give her deprived students a chance in life. Screenwriter Ronald Bass pushes his luck linking Bob Dylan and Dylan Thomas, and the results-by-reward policy will have many teachers up in arms. Still, what can you do when the story is true?

  • Despite its basis in fact, this comes across as bland and unbelievable wish-fulfilment, just another feel-good fantasy about tough, restive delinquents being tamed by poetry.

Typical clichés, contradicted by good acting

Michelle Pfeiffer leads the cast in this drama set in a North California school. The storyline is easy to read, and the ending is clear to see half way through the film.

Ex-Marine Louanne Johnson (Pfeiffer) is left in a high school classroom armed only with her integrity and courage. With strong acting from Pfeiffer and the students, in particular - Emilio (Wade Dominguez), Raul (Renoly Santiago) and Carrie (Bruklun Harris), the film relies more upon its sentimental value rather than the story. Watch the trials and tribulations of Louanne Johnson as she tries to lead misguided students away from accepting failure towards a brighter future.

    A nondescript script

If you've got any imagination whatsoever, you can tell from the cover exactly what's going to happen and how. This is still watchable though, with an attractive lead and good acting. Just don't take it seriously - and whatever you do, don't let this film inspire you to go into teaching - being smart, attractive and teaching a few marine moves will *not* endear you to deprived teenagers in real life.

Ryan Gosling's Dan Dunne is the most inspirational teacher I've seen at the movies since Jack Black in School of Rock. Or at any rate, the most credible. Sure, he splits from the History curriculum to teach dialectics to his class of Angelino eighth graders. Yes, he illustrates his theorem by arm-wrestling the students. But what really sets Mr Dunne apart isn't his unconventional style. It's his manic-depressive streak and raging cocaine habit - both directly attributable to his liberal-leftist Read more
