What a wonderfully assured peice of film making. Reminiscent of Kieslowski at the height of his powers, it explores the themes of loss, revenge and reconciliation. The narrative is visual and the pace forces you to examine your own attitude to the complex issues raised. I wish all films could be of this calibre. No hesitation in giving this 5 stars - I would give it 6 if I could.

How do you cope with knowing that the murderer of your father is walking free and been made exempt from any further prosecution after a recent war torn history. That is the question faced in this movie in a fairly sombre and reasoned manner but without any melodramatic overtones that would have been indulged in by the majority of film makers.

I'll try to recall my previous thoughts.

relentless study of character, revenge, human foibles, infatuation, modernity, market forces, African culture, religion, fable, consciousness, but well filmed in the African context. Some scenes are laboured, and at times the acting is not that good. but good.

  • A dry season for acting

A very disappointing viewing experience to say the least. The poor standard of acting really doesn’t help the meandering pace of this story. I understand that this film was commissioned by the New Crowned Hope Festival to commemorate the 250th birthday of Mozart. The themes of revenge and reconciliation run clearly throughout the film, inspired by Mozart's La clemenza di Tito. Whilst the aims of this production are virtuous, I still don’t understand how Darratt won the Grand Special Jury Prize at the Venice International Film Festival (perhaps it was a quiet year)? Overall, I was left with the feeling that an opportunity had been missed.
