Daredevil

The latest Marvel Comics superhero to hit the big screen is Daredevil (Ben Affleck), a man blinded by a radioactive chemical accident as a young boy but left with superhuman senses and agile acrobatic ability. Like his Marvel compatriot Spider-Man, Daredevil attempts to lead a normal life by day as Matt Murdock, a Hell's Kitchen defense attorney. By night Matt becomes Daredevil, a brooding superhero fighting for justice in the dark and squalid New York streets overrun with vermin and criminal injustice. Wearing a red leather suit and mask, Daredevil leaps from high skyscrapers and tracks his enemies with his radar-like vision, punishing those who are guilty but whom he cannot tackle in the courtroom. At the center of the city's villainous underbelly is Daredevil's nemesis Kingpin (Michael Clarke Duncan) and his psychotic, knife-wielding deputy-assassin Bullseye (Colin Farrell). Daredevil fights their powerful forces alone, until he meets Elektra Natchios (Jennifer Garner of ALIAS fame), a skilled martial artist and sexy superheroine who is after Bullseye and Kingpin for murdering her father. Sparks fly as the two heroes take on the underlords of crime together in this action-packed adventure fantasy that will surely delight fans of SPIDER-MAN, X-MEN, or BATMAN.

There are redeeming features to this latest, high-kicking Marvel comic adaptation — not least its strong visuals and attractive cast — but these do not add up to a satisfying whole. As a child, Matt Murdock is blinded by radioactive waste that simultaneously heightens his other senses. He grows up to be a New York lawyer (played by Ben Affleck) who doubles as a nocturnal, leather-clad crime-fighter. As the first instalment of a potential franchise, the film goes through the motions of setting up the story and characters, with the flashbacks to Matt's boyhood the strongest episode. Thereafter the narrative gets flabby — introducing a soppy love story involving Jennifer Garner of TV's Alias and a cursory game of cat-and-mouse against Colin Farrell's poorly sketched villain — and the action is sapped of clarity by rushed editing, and subtlety by the relentless heavy metal soundtrack. It's Batman without the camp — or the memorable villains.

    BAREDEVIL

Ben Affleck is only rivalled by John Travolta in his ability to choose very, very cheesy scripts. This is certainly not his worst choice so far -- I still get night sweats from Pearl Harbour --- but it is certainly his third worse choice after Gigli. This movie is ruined by epileptic editing. Fight scenes blinker like strobe lights - shot as they are at many different angles --- chopped as they are into one second slices, there could easily have been a flash of a penis in there and no-one would have noticed. Who is fighting who? There is a flash on the roof, and then the criminal falls to the ground. The window breaks and then there is a shadow. The other criminal fall to the ground. The swinging lightbulb pops. A penis flashes on the screen. A cat eats a Mars Bar. Daredevils velcro pants flash past. And then the fight is over. And suddenly Matt Murdock, Daredevils alter ego, is not the only person who has been blinded by waste. Colin Farrell can act - but he is poorly directed and his character is flaky at best, embarresing at worst. The target tatoo on his head screams 'shoot me'. He can't save this movie. Jennifer Garner looks great and can act, but she is poorly directed. She can't save this movie. Ben Affleck can't act AND looks bad. He definately can't save this movie.

Affleck does it again ... badly

I so want to like Ben Affleck as an actor but I can't help thinking he's in the wrong job. I've seen him in a few films now and although I thought he was good in Good Will Hunting and okay in Chasing Amy everything else has been disappointing. I was reluctant to watch Dare Devil because of this until my brother informed me it was a very good movie - never trust family.

However, it was watchable and I didn't fall asleep and I like the sonar effect so for that reason I give it more than one star. Unfortunately, I watched this after several other superhero movies and in retrospect should have seen this one first. To be honest, now I've seen Spidey 2 nothing else will do.

I sincerely think this film would have been much better (despite the slack direction) had the casting been better.

Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner are making plans for their first movie collaboration in six years. The couple first met on the set of 2001 movie Pearl Harbor but didn't start dating until they were reunited for 2003 film Daredevil. Since they wed in 2005, their careers have taken different paths - but Garner admits they're considering an onscreen reunion. Garner tells Us Weekly magazine, "We were just talking about it. It keeps coming up." Read more
