There are redeeming features to this latest, high-kicking Marvel comic adaptation — not least its strong visuals and attractive cast — but these do not add up to a satisfying whole. As a child, Matt Murdock is blinded by radioactive waste that simultaneously heightens his other senses. He grows up to be a New York lawyer (played by Ben Affleck) who doubles as a nocturnal, leather-clad crime-fighter. As the first instalment of a potential franchise, the film goes through the motions of setting up the story and characters, with the flashbacks to Matt's boyhood the strongest episode. Thereafter the narrative gets flabby — introducing a soppy love story involving Jennifer Garner of TV's Alias and a cursory game of cat-and-mouse against Colin Farrell's poorly sketched villain — and the action is sapped of clarity by rushed editing, and subtlety by the relentless heavy metal soundtrack. It's Batman without the camp — or the memorable villains.

Ben Affleck is only rivalled by John Travolta in his ability to choose very, very cheesy scripts. This is certainly not his worst choice so far -- I still get night sweats from Pearl Harbour --- but it is certainly his third worse choice after Gigli. This movie is ruined by epileptic editing. Fight scenes blinker like strobe lights - shot as they are at many different angles --- chopped as they are into one second slices, there could easily have been a flash of a penis in there and no-one would have noticed. Who is fighting who? There is a flash on the roof, and then the criminal falls to the ground. The window breaks and then there is a shadow. The other criminal fall to the ground. The swinging lightbulb pops. A penis flashes on the screen. A cat eats a Mars Bar. Daredevils velcro pants flash past. And then the fight is over. And suddenly Matt Murdock, Daredevils alter ego, is not the only person who has been blinded by waste. Colin Farrell can act - but he is poorly directed and his character is flaky at best, embarresing at worst. The target tatoo on his head screams 'shoot me'. He can't save this movie. Jennifer Garner looks great and can act, but she is poorly directed. She can't save this movie. Ben Affleck can't act AND looks bad. He definately can't save this movie.
i hated the whole blind superhero idea..... and i think it affected my enjoyment of the film.
acted ok, the film is nowhere near that of X-Men or Spiderman. i just felt that something was lacking - had a week to digest the movie and still cant put my finger on it.
Still a fairly enjoyable romp and im glad i watched it - but i wont be re-watching it.
Why in this day and age do people think they can get away with Superhero movies lacking in proper action. Compare the set-piece thrills to films like the Matrix, Spiderman 1+2 and the Hulk once it gets going, and it just looks completely second rate. Ben Affleck is actually very cool as the blind super hero but the baddies are lame (Colin Farrell as a bald bloke who throws stuff?) and Kingpin who has suddenly turned black (if you read the comics). Jennifer Garner is pretty sexy as Electra but even she doesn't quite cut it. Overall severly lacking.
You don't need to engage your brain for this at all...but who cares? Sometimes you just want sit back and just enjoy the visuals, effects, sound. Daredevil has all these in spades, which is just as well because the acting is wooden as hell and you never really find yourself caring about any of the characters. I've never really taken to Ben Affleck as an actor(apart from Good Will Hunting), but he does an ok job here. Jennifer Garner is gorgeous and Colin Farrell is funny.
The action is ok, but a little repetitive. The best thing is the way it is shot, with a dark feel (a bit like The Crow).
In summary, I enjoyed it, but will easily be able to contain my excitement if they release Daredevil II.
The only daredevil will be you when you add this one to your selection.
Appalling. I dont normally write reviews, but even weeknight TV would have been more entertaining. Do yourself a favor and give this one a miss.

The film begins as all superhero films do, portraying the moment when the hero became a hero. The first half an hour of the movie is excellent and you really start to get into it, you feel sorry for the young daredevil as it goes through his childhood in New York's Hell's kitchen. However as it goes on it becomes unbelievably unrealistic, which some might say its meant to be as its from a comic. But films like superman, spiderman, x-men all stay realistic to the power of the hero(s). The introduction of a second hero or heroin really takes the edge off the film as the two actors cast just dont fit the parts. It almost becomes too comic book with Farrell's character which in my opinion is a bad thing. This film has some fantastic fight scenes and special effects which bring the standard back up and eventually Affleck begins to fit his role more. But it all feels so confined as though they filmed it all on one street with the same extras and background sets etc. The hero himself is an excellent one but he outdoes himself as for some reason he can almost fly?? But some novel ideas make it an interesting movie, such as the way Daredevil sees like bats do through sonar, which is particularly well done. Good soundtrack, good ideas, excellent special effects and set-up nicely for a sequel. 3 Stars
Personally I was a big fan of the theatrical cut, and so I bought this new version of the film. All I can say is wow, completly new characters have been included, some scenes have alternate takes, one of my least favourite scenes is gone altogether. It shows Daredevil for who he is dark by night and the laywer by day. The role of Foggy is hilarious with some brilliant one liners when defending Coolio's character. I highly recommend that you rent.
Oh dear. If I could give this film 0 stars I would. It is truly awful.
Friends came to stay one weekend and bought this DVD as a present. We sat and watched it and if we managed to sit through it to the end I don't remember, but we certainly started talking halfway through and universally decided this to be absolute rubbish. So rubbish in fact, that we have been sending this DVD back and forth to each other like some kind of pass-the-parcel in reverse - each time cunningly disguised as something else so that you don't know you've got it until you have unwrapped the parcel by which time it's too late: you're stuck with it.
Affleck is so wooden words fail me. This is the 3rd film I've seen him in and he is useless. I am avoiding all Ben Affleck films from now on.
You probably need to have read the relevant comic books to understand - or, indeed, care - what is going on and, quite frankly, that isn't good enough. The love interest was sexy-looking (they should have made the film about her) and Colin Farrell munched his way through the scenery in a way which made me think he knew he was appearing in tripe, but that's not enough.
Plus, laugh-out-loud, it's a 2-discer! Talk about nerve!

I never really 'dug' the comic book hero that is Daredevil - his superpowers always seemed some of the most unrealistic out of all the superheroes. Although Frank Miller's series of stories is excellent and required reading for anybody who calls themselves a comics aficionado. Anyway, back to the film. Major flaws -(1) Ben Affleck is too wooden (I am not a Ben Affleck hate monger per se, he can act and 'do' action, but in this film he certainly was not 'the bomb'); (2) the script - too superficial and the development of the villains (Kingpin and Bullseye both) was non-existent (when will Hollywood learn that only if we are interested in the Hero and the Villain will the story hang together!). Count Daddy's final thought - definitely no Spiderman.
You know that feeling on a Saturday night?, when you've just forked out about four quid on a rental, got it home, put it on, settled down, and after about 22 minutes or so, your face drops, and the words 'oh no, not again' start ringing in your ears, as you realize with dread and horror that you've been pulled in and rented a Minger!
Well now you can re-live those feelings again by putting Daredevil on your list.
Enjoy.
(One star, only cos i had to.)
dull, dull , dull.
i am easily pleased, let me tell you, and nearly every film that falls on my doormat has had something about it that i have liked.... but this!
it has the same moody atmosphere as the batman films, but that is where any comparison stops. very little - if any - action, dreary dialogue and i feel too much reliance on ben affleck as the good looking super hero to draw attention away from the lack of plot.
