Pre-Matrix revelations
By B Cooke from London , 12 May 2004[Highly rated reviewer]
The similarities between The Matrix and Dark City are strong. Both focus on brooding central characters somehow out of sync with the world around them and becoming aware of their own capabilities. In fact, The Matrix was filmed directly after Dark City at Fox Studios on Australia's Gold Coast. Parts of the rooftop sets were used for both films.
Rufus Sewell plays the main character, John Murdoch, as a man struggling to reach the truth of both the city and himself.
Kiefer Sutherland, complete with limp and weird accent, is John's tortured mentor. Jennifer Connelly plays his wife, the pseudo femme fatale, who needs rescuing herself. The city too is a character, menacing and alive.
Perhaps if this film had had a Matrix size budget it would have garnered more attention. Perhaps that's for the best as we're guaranteed no lesser sequels. As it stands, Proyas has created a little known gem with images and ideas which swirl in the mind for a long time after viewing.- Was this review helpful to you?

By a customer , 29 Dec 2012a very good film and the idiots on here bemoaning the fact it's like The Matrix THIS WAS YEARS BEFORE THE MATRIX THIS IS WHERE THE MATRIX STOLE IT'S IDEAS FROM!!!! obviously this film is too clever for the average film watcher but seeing as I am above cretin-level intelligence i did enjoy it.- Was this review helpful to you?

A long yawn
By badger1972 (16 reviews) from West London , 08 Jul 2012[Highly rated reviewer]
a scifi film noir, very Brazil-a like in design, mixed with a large slice of The Matrix.....it was okay but I've seen this idea done far better before. Pretty boring and predictable- Was this review helpful to you?

Two Words : Absolutely Rubbish!!
By Richie77777 (250 reviews) from Essex , 20 Jan 2012My first impression is the scenery reminds me of certain scenes from the Matrix.
The main actor wakes up in what can only be described as the creepiest looking bathroom! (Kinda reminds me of the bathroom used in, 'Saw.') He has no memory of what has taken place.
Interestly its got the original presenter, (Richard O'Brien) off the Crystal Maze in it!
The main character, (Jon Murdoch) somehow uses some mystical powers to get his wallet out of a glass box.
The police are onto him suspecting that he has murdered several women.
Even twenty minutes in I'm not enjoying this movie in the slightiest.
There's a large group of Richard O'Brien look alikes underground and I've no idea what they're doing!
'What's happening here? Why is everyone asleep?!' (Including me!!)
It is very similar to the Matrix in the fact that a plunger plugs into a person's head.- Was this review helpful to you?

Quirky but a little boring/long
By Louisemtoc (4 reviews) , 02 Dec 2011It's different. But not that great. Sorry can't give a better review. Was a little bored from time to time, seemed to drag. Maybe that was because I was falling alseep. Loved Keiffer Sutherland in this though. Quirky.- Was this review helpful to you?
