A fantastical, puppet-filled adventure, this tale co-directed by Muppet creator Jim Henson and Frank Oz reveals the story of Jen, a young Gelfling boy chosen by prophecy to mend the Dark Crystal, which broke 1,000 years ago and plunged the land under the dominion of the evil, quarrelsome Skeksis. Fearing the prophecy, whose fulfillment would mean the end of their reign, the Skeksis exterminated the Gelflings--all but Jen and Kira, a girl he meets on his journey to the crystal. Pursued by the Skeksis and their dark creatures, Jen and Kira race to the crystal, even as their time runs out.

Few film-makers feel at home in the realms of fantasy, but Jim Henson had an affinity with the magical. Although The Dark Crystal emerged from the darker side of his imagination, it's still a mesmerising picture that will enchant older children and adults alike. The story is a basic slice of sword and sorcery, following Jen and Kira as they attempt to restore a splinter of a crystal that will free the Mystics from the tyranny of the Skeksis. However, there is a liberal sprinkling of Muppet-style humour to enliven the adventure, and, with the exception of the Gelflings, the creatures are inspired.

Sometimes people forget what an absolute genius Jim Henson was.
Ah, yea he was the talking sock guy many think, this film makes you realise that he was so much more.
Despite now being over twenty years old, the costumes and creatures that he devised for this film, still carry a personality far stronger than any of the CGI?d characters that seem to be infesting certain movies (cough cough Lucas) and will still give your youngsters bad guys to hide from and good guys to cheer on.
Rent this today, you won?t regret it.
The Mallard has spoken
A unique fantasy starring animatronics and puppets only, set in a brilliantly realized alternate world with some seriously unusual ecology, 'The Dark Crystal' is something special. It has depth and real philosophical understanding; the denouement is genuinely satisfying.
I'm told some kids don't like the monsters, but I saw it young first and never was scared at all. Some of the creatures are unbelievably clever in design (the work of Brian Froud) and all are convincing in execution.
The plot is a playing through of archetypes in a certain way - not a drama really, just a story, but a meaningful one. The Trevor Howard score plays it epic and grandiose, there's real imagination on display, and laughs as well. If you've never seen it and are in the mood for something unusual with warmth and strangeness in a captivating blend, you're in for a treat.
