A cautionary tale about poor plumbing and a poorly supervised child. Ultimately daft.- Was this review helpful to you?

(328)A tale of incompetent parenting and building maintenance.
By NoMoreFaith (6 reviews) from Newcastle upon Tyne , 07 Feb 2012Dark Water is a harrowing tale of incompetent parenting and building regulations.
It also has a ghost story subplot.
Hollywood is quite rightfully criticised for its predictable horror movie cliches, but the same is true for this overlong and insensible offering.
While it can be argued the central mother character is having a nervous breakdown, and re-emergence of hinted mental problems is an excuse for her illogical actions in the given situation, it still makes the movie an exercise in cringe-inducing decision making.
In fact, the most horrific aspect of this movie is the maltreatment, albeit unintentional, of the child. It seemed obvious to me, that the ghost was actually doing the child less harm than the neglect of her mother.
Its slow to build up, and doesn't use the time to build the characters coherently nor provide suitable back story for the main premise which is of course, haunting.
I wouldn't say, don't bother with this movie, its definitely watchable, but compared to ringu and the grudge is lacks punch.. or sense.- Was this review helpful to you?

Was it REALLY 96 Minutes
By MHM78 (4 reviews) , 01 Feb 2012Was really looking forward to seeing this film, it sounds good enough, the problem i found was that the film kind of plodded along, Nothing seemed to be resolved at the end of the film, it felt like it was an hour longer than what it was.
It is an ok watch, but don't expect to be blown away.- Was this review helpful to you?

Investigating the strange noise will only end in tears!
By Oms (2 reviews) , 25 Oct 2011Horror films that rely heavily on their characters being stupid enough to do all the things that any sane person would never dream of doing in their wildest dreams are always bad horror films!
'Stop leaving your child alone when you already know there are scary things going on!'
'No, don't investigate the eerie noises coming from that horrible, dank looking derelict building with no lighting!'
'Who in their right mind would choose an elevator over stairs when they're trying to get away from the scary, evil ghost thing?' Not me, I'll tell you that for free!
There are no excuses for unconvincing character behaviours in a horror film except lazy writing. And this is why 'Dark Water' failed to impress. One other reason not to bother with this film is another film called 'Ring', if you've not already done so, watch it!- Was this review helpful to you?
