Good, gory fun

Twelve years before reviving the superhero genre with Spider-man’s meteoric success, Sam Raimi made this tremendously enjoyable comic-book flick, which is, in many ways, superior to the bubble-gum blandness of Spider-man.
Phantom of the Opera meets The Fly is the premise, and the excuse for numerous spectacular action sequences, trippy camera movements, and oddball humour- all trademark Raimi stuff. And while there are problems- very dated special effects and too many tacky one-liners- there’s also a surprising depth to Darkman, which, needless to say, is not what you’d expect from this kind of film.
Similar to Robocop in terms of exuberance and style, but lacking its satirical bite, this is still an exemplary genre exercise and one of the edgiest superhero movies yet.- Was this review helpful to you?

He manages to mix comedy and horror together like nobody else and somehow it just works. I particularly enjoyed the corny, comic-book style dialogue and the clever use of slap-stick to emphasise the fact that we really are in fantastical fictional territory. You can almost see the graphic novel unfold before you. Has a real touch of Phantom of the Opera about it too. Watch out for the brief appearance of Bruce Campbell. Darkman. Is it dated?

They've come to see the freak...
By dickjones (5 reviews) from London , 16 Apr 201020 years before the genre became a cash cow for Hollywood and huge budgets were thrown at pedestrian nonsense like Daredevil, Sam Raimi attempted to bring his take on the supehero genre to the big screen.
Neeson plays our protagonist Peyton Manning, a mild mannered scientist who falls afoul of an the sadistic mobster Rogert G Durant (Larry Drake), leaving him ostracised and pushed to the edge of society and his own sanity.
What follows is a carefully intertwined plot as Manning struggles to reclaim the life he once had while committed to exacting revenge on Durant and his underlings.
The film has obviously aged but considering it is over 20 years old but if you can see past this limitation it is still an enjoyable and somewhat thoughful cult classic. Some of the scenes of Darkman in a rain soaked alley coudl have been lifeted directly from the pages of your favourite comic book, and the internal wranglings Petyon Manning struggles with makes for an interesting statement on societies treatment of outsiders. Indeed Leeson spent time with victims of horrific burns to get a deeper understanding of their daily battles.
It's easy to see why this has been rated as a cult classic and I would not be surprised to see this remade by hollywood.. I'm not sure they would ever capture the 'Pink elephant' moment as well though.
