An uplifting family drama about the danger of drug addiction. Meredith Baxter plays Mary Ann, a nurse at a methadone clinic who falls in love with one of her patients, Guy (Stephen Lang). While helping him overcome his drug addiction, she still manages to hide her own dalliances with narcotics--so well, in fact, that no one suspects at all. The pair marry and have a child, but soon Mary Ann's troubled past and hidden addiction threaten the stability of the happy life that she and Guy finally have for themselves. DARKNESS BEFORE DAWN illustrates the power of family love and how it can overcome even the greatest personal problems.

Stephen Lang probably best-known for playing the gay labour leader in Last Exit to Brooklyn portrays a recovering drug addict, who finds inspiration in the strength of a woman (Meredith Baxter of Family Ties fame) working at the clinic that is treating him. Until, that is, he discovers that her troubles are worse than his. Not a load of laughs in this TV movie based on a true story, but sufficient dramatic interest.
Good story or Co-dependancy and addiction. Shows how many people who enter the 'caring' profession, have almost, if not as much, 'baggage' of their own. Can be a useful tool as well as a powerful movie.
